video

I have just finished recording my videos and realized what a terrible reader I really am. Anyway, it went pretty smoothly except for some stumble of words. I am going to edit those words right now.

Journal #9

Theme- stay at home fathers
Primary text- modern family
Secondary-glee

Intro-  I will talk about how now a days our society's views have changed. I will talk deeper into how families have have two fathers now or two mothers instead of the standard mother and father. Later I will relate and introduce the texts I chose.
Thesis- Stay at home fathers were a very unusual thing until now things are changing, and the texts modern family and glee introduce how gay couples take a large role in our society.

Modern Family:
The two guys that had the daughter acted as if they were a normal married couple (because they were), but it is very different to see on the television. The fact that the media is making shows about this is almost promoting that it is okay to have a family like this, allowing younger kids who are going to watch it think that it might be a right thing to do. The two guys are the target in this film.

Glee:
I will talk about how a large majority of the kids in the choir group were gay, and even if they weren't it was very much accepted. The lesbian cheerleaders and the gay guy hitting on the new guy is an example I could use as it being very normal in there high school. I want to mention how the audience might think that it is a normal thing to have gay couples in television shows and might even attract gay viewers, and take viewers away from it. Unlike modern family where there is multiple family situations, some of the glee audience might be turned away since it is greatly focused on the gays.

Journal #8

The descriptive language helped me shape my text into an overall exciting essay, but the diction and word choice did as well.
correction- The descriptive language, diction and word choice all helped me shape my tezxt into an overall exciting essay.

Being so homesick in England, airsickness was a very strong word that related to being left alone.
correction- After starting to feel homesick on my trip, hearing the word "airsickness' hit me very deep because it reminded me of the feeling of being alone.

Another thing that can completely change your persona, is your audience.
correction- Another example that can change you persona would be your audience.

Through out my trip to studying abroad, I learned that it is okay to be afraid and alone.
correction- Though out my trip I learned that it is OK to feel scared and alone.

After analyzing two different texts, I learned the way I was writing was for a certain audience
correction- I learned that I was writing for a certain audience once I read two different types of texts.

When writing for a professional audience who I am trying to impress, I change my persona and identity as a writer hoping they accept me.
correction-I change my persona and identity as a writer for either a professional audience or a higher authority.

It is a terrible feeling getting sick on an airplane, and that is why I relate these dry heaves back to being homesick.
correction- When you get sick you dry heave and it is the most miserable feeling in the world and that is why I relate this feeling.

When writing this essay, . The descriptive language changes the whole perspective for viewers.
correction- The descriptive language helps viewers get a perspective on what the essay is about.

You can tell the difference in my writing when I am casually writing to a friend or if I am trying to impress someone.
correction- When I am writing to a friend or writing to a teacher, you can always tell the difference.

After relating a personal story to my text however, really helped me see how certain diction and language can mean so much more.
correction- Relating a personal story to my text really allowed me to see how my diction and language can mean so much more.

After reading "Rules for Writers", I took Diane Hackers advice by correcting many of my sentences. When ever I used the word "where" I would fill that with the actual place that I was talking about. Instead of using many commas, I made the sentence flow a lot easier with out them. After reading the Hacker advice, I learned that most of the time you dont always catch your mistake. It helped a lot.

Journal # 6 analyzing a commercial

After watching many of the advertisements in class, I realized there is a lot more to commercials than I really thought. Everyone had very different commercials, but yet all could be analyzed in a similar way. Through out this English 101 class, It has really opened my eyes to all the different ways you can analyze a text. My favorite commercial that played was the commercial of the animals. It was very well used because as the audience, I was completely drawn in. As a viewer, I wanted to buy the product or donate because they reeled me in very well. What you don't realize when watching this commercial on a normal daily basis, is all of this things that make it up to be so good. Things such as the sad music, the famous movie star, and the sad videos of cats and dogs that they show to make you feel upset. It would of made anyone feel sympathy for those animals after watching that commercial. The argument was very simple because it made you feel really guilty and want to donate. There argument was that because these animals are being harmed, you should donate the extra cause so they can help them survive.

The object of the advertisement is to pull you in and make you want to buy whatever the product really is. For an example, me and Jackies' commercial was about how pepsi is promoted by the hottest celebrity (Britney Spears) to con people into to trying to buy pepsi.  The significance of this is that at that time, Christina Aguilara was promoting the opposite rival which was coke. The main argument was that coke is better than pepsi. The thesis for ours was "the use of Britneys Spears as an advertisement agent appears to the audience in a stronger way than a commercial actor would" which means that they used Britney as the center focus of there commercial so that viewers would that if someone as great as her is drinking there product that they should too. I thought it was good in the animal commercial when they said that it is an emotional appeal because it really tries "tugging at your heart strings" making you want to donate the money to the foundation. The popular celebrity they used most definitely detracted from the argument, just like Britney Spears did for ours.

The Britney spears commercial had a mix of Ethos as well because Britney Spears was such an idol, it was almost as if she was trusted by her fans and some one worth listening to. It also was very emotional because her hardcore fans feel like that can connect with her on a different level. It was emotional also because of the cute smile she flashes in between parts in the commercial and her young bubbly self making it seem like she doesn't even try hard. Fans like to feel comfortable and feel as if they connect with her so well, than pepsi might be a great choice.

Journal #5

When comparing Sloan's text in the WR to the hyper text version, I realized how much easier and to the point the hypertext was. Everyone might have there own opinion, but when clicking on the link I immediately started reading the short paragraphs knowing that it would be a quick read for me to get the central idea. When reading the paragraphs, I would glance at the picture that the author had posted which helped me as a reader picture it in my head. Not only get an idea of what she is talking about, but also to get the quick facts that you may want to know. The hypertext version was not as detailed and descriptive as the text in the WR, and left out many details that made the story sound more interesting. The hyper text is short and precise, allowing there audience to have a better understand for what the link is really about. Sloan's text in "What They Say about Glass Houses" was lengthier and gave readers a better understanding of characters, there surroundings, and time period. The author uses descriptive language and detail in order to make it a put- together story with a beginning, middle and end. A story is automatically going to be more enjoyable if it is interesting, but if you need to go straight to the point then the hypertext version is more effective. There are pros and cons about both of the texts, but I personally liked the hypertext. It was shorter, easier, and visually helped me get a better understanding of  what they were talking about. It all depends on which version is more favorable to you as a reader.

My Visit at the CESL

I was so excited when I found out that we got to visit with students from different places around the world. When I got there I realized that there was a variety of many different students that were all in the same English class. It did not matter where they were from, they were all there to learn how to speak English correctly. When we were waiting for the class to start, many of the foreign students were laughing, joking, and sharing there stories with there friends being obnoxious and energetic teenagers just like us American kids would do. For some reason when you hear people speaking a different language, you do not think they are like you in any way. You automatically think that they are weird or different, you wouldn't never realize that you have so much in common. It makes you realize how a like we are.

The girl that I got to sit down and meet with was so amazing! We instantly clicked and started talking about the funniest things. Even though we had those assigned questions we had to ask them, I started asking her random questions like what her favorite store is and what TV shows she likes to watch or even who she thought was cute in the room! :) It was so much fun to listen to her because we were so similar. I felt like the questions helped, but having a casual conversation with her made her more interested and also taught her a lot of slang. She told me that her favorite TV show is Gossip Girl and how we agreed on the best looking characters and also her favorite store is Forever 21! We laughed and joked about things and I think it really made her smile.  When I asked about her family on the other hand, I think we found our differences. I asked her if she missed them and why she even came here. She looked at me like I was crazy and shook her head saying "no not really, we want to leave and study some where". Which I understand it IS very important studying, but you could tell that it meant everything to her.

I also sat with a guy and he was very amusing as well. He explained the family thing a little bit better for me. I asked him if he had any brothers and sisters, and he looked at me weird and said no. He told me that in China you can only have one child but you have a cousin that you get close to. The family question made a lot of sense to me after talking to him about it, because I could see how you would want to get out and do something for yourself like going to a University. He also told me that the Chinese are very selfish back at home, but when there is a small of them for an example here at Arizona, they all act nice to each other. He said it was unusual for you to talk to anyone other then your own family and you always put yourself first. What made me happy was that they were enjoying Arizona. I knew it was hard for them to be that far away, but they love it here.

When reading "Letter to Mexico",  I got a negative vibe from the story. I didn't like how she wasn't proud of where she came from. The only thing that I could relate to the short story was that the girl that I talked to said that the hardest struggle for her is talking to cashiers and clerks, trying to get them to understand what she is saying. In "Letter to Mexico", she got a letter from her friend Rosa in decent English when she was a Spanish speaking women and when she struggled to write a Spanish letter back to her. I could see that it would be really hard for some one like my friend that I talked to from China to do the same. What made me really happy was that she found me on face book and even though her whole face book is in Chinese, she went out of her way to write in English to me. Even though it was only a short sentence, it meant a lot to me and also meant that she was really trying. I am happy that we got to meet with these students and I hope we can do it again!!

Journal #2

I changed my text twice because at first I wanted to write about my face book page because it seemed pretty easy, but then I realized I barely even update my status's enough to analyze them. So, I ended up writing about my college essay. Only because it was SO easy to write about since I tried so unbelievably hard to impress the colleges I was trying to get into...but come on everyone did that. In the story "Pass", Boyer Rickels was trying to get across the idea that through out the main characters life he questioned his sexuality putting up a persona by being some one else in front of his friends and not expressing him self or being proud of it. I would relate my college essay to this story because I felt like while writing my college essay, I not only tried to make my self sound as this "perfect" girl who would be great for there perfect college, but I changed who I really was. I will never forget giving my college essay to my brother and him responding, " this does not sound like you". I relate the two because in both we lost our identity in the process only to impress others. Some differences would be that he chose not to say anything to his friends or be confident of the fact that he was gay and it was more of a life long front that he put up, when mine was basically a really exaggerate piece of paper written so they can know myself in a nutshell. But together, in the end, they both are about acceptance and putting up a persona of someone your not.
